  • OIC is an action organization, not an advocacy organization. It is in the business of helping students bring tangible, measurable change to their lives.
  • OIC attacks the root causes of poverty, not just the symptoms, by helping students build their qualifications and get jobs – A hand up, not a handout! Teach people to fish rather than giving them a fish.
  • Even though OIC’s programs are free to students, those students must still make a significant commitment of time, energy and determination if they are to succeed. There are no stipends at OIC.
  • OIC is financially stable with Net Asset Gains for the past three years. On June 30, 2011, cash reserves covered 4.36 months of operation.
  • A robust aggregation report, made possible with upgrades in technology, gives demographics and tracks the outcomes of every student.
  • OIC is a United Way agency. It meets the rigorous requirements of United Way and has received commendation from both the professional and volunteer responsible.
  • Volunteers play a vital role in making OIC the efficient and effective operation that it is. OIC estimates the value of volunteer services presently to be $72,000. In 2010-11, it received gifts in kind valued at $13,000.
  • In 2010-11 a $47,155 foundation grant funded the latest technology.
  • OIC presently receives no government funding. In 2002-03, 78% of OIC’s revenue came from the Department of Human Services (DHS), but OIC could only serve DHS referrals, mothers with dependent children. Today federal assistance with workforce development is limited to target groups such as returning veterans and displaced workers.  OIC is open to the entire community.
  • OIC last year moved to 1819 Charlotte Avenue, an ideal location for OIC’s population with good access to public transportation, parking and on one level for handicapped access.
